Abstract

Most Bridge Plugs and Packers are set on electric wireline. A special slow set power charge has been developed to slow the setting motion of the WLPSA to properly set Bride Plugs and Packers. Hydrostatic Setting Tools have been used for this same purpose, but without some method of regulating or controlling the setting motion, they often improperly set the BP or Packer by moving too fast. A controlled delay of the setting motion was taught in US Patent 4535842 by hydraulic metering of the supply oil to the setting pistons. This invention would use one or more hydraulic dampening pistons to control the setting motion of the Hydrostatic WLPSA. Currently a Hydraulic Damper Sytem is used with a hydraulic Setting Tool in order to control the destructive, violent motion of the Hydrauilc Setting Tool after the shear ring has been sheared and the Bridge Plug Set. This invention would use a similar system, with a more restrictive hydrualic meter, to control the motionof the Setting Tool during setting of the Bridge Plug. The primary adavantage of this system is that the metering is indepedent of supply (bottom hole pressure). This will make it easier to use and more reliable. A typical slickline conveyed system would consist of a hydrostatic setting Tool with hydraulic controller. The Trigger would be pre-programmed to open when the BHA is at setting depth. Well bore fluid or gas would then enter the Hydrostatic Setting Tool and begin setting the Bridge Plug. Oil inside the Hydrostatic Setting Tools would be metered internally from one side of the damper pistons to the other to achieve an approximate setting time of 30 to 60 seconds. The shear stud would then be sheared and the Setting Tool released from the Bridge Plug
