Abstract

A parking meter is a device used to collect money in exchange for the right to park a vehicle in a particular place for a limited amount of time. Parking meters need to communicate with some servers, e.g. management center and bank clearing server that exist on Internet to do some operations, such as status report and credit card operations. In current parking meter systems, every parking meter connects to Internet using a long distance wireless link, usually GPRS (General Packet Radio Service). Every parking meter needs to pay the monthly communication fee. The system structure is like in Figure 1. In current product development plans, the reduction of the communication fee is projected by combining long distance and near distance wireless communication technologies. As illustrated in Figure 2, in new systems, only a part of nodes - called gateway node - are equipped with long distance wireless communication devices (e.g. GPRS modem), and they share the wireless WAN (Wide Area Network) link for other nodes - called plain node. Plain nodes first connect to corresponding gateway nodes by some kind of free near distance wireless link, such as IEEE802.15.4 (standard of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers), and then connect to the server. In the case of Figure 2, only one third of nodes are using GPRS, therefore the communication cost is reduced to one third.
