Abstract

Currently used hearing aids offer only a limited functionality to connect with the environment. Up to now, there is the possibility to connect the hearing aid directly to a base station or RCU (Remote Control Unit) via near-field communication technology, whereas the base station in turn is connected to e.g. a portable audio or television devices by using Bluetooth technology.

In the following it is proposed to include Wi-Fi technology (Wi-Fi: Wireless Fidelity), or similar standard radio transmission technologies, into the base station or RCU of the hearing aid to support an internet connectivity in public places, home and office environments. Thus, the base station can connect to a central server, which provides several web services, like news updates, internetradio, music streaming etc. Furthermore, special features like web-phone based applications are conceivable.
