Disclosed is a method and system for removing sensitive information from pushed instant messages passing through third party notification servers.

Normally, when an instant message is received, a notification dialog corresponding to the received instant message is displayed on a mobile device of a receiver. The notification dialog represents the information contained in the instant message. For example, when a CEO of a company sends confidential information regarding sales of the company to an employee, the notification dialog may display the confidential information. The confidential information may only be meant to be viewed by the employee, but any one with physical access to device may view the confidential information displayed by the notification dialog.

Typically an instant message passes through multiple locations on its path from a sender to a receiver as illustrated in the Figure.

As shown in Figure 1, an instant message travels from the sender to an instant messaging application developer, to a push notification system of a mobile device manufacturer, to a carrier, and finally to a mobile device of the receiver. This chain of instant message forwarding provides different locations where instant message filtering for sensitive information may be provided.

According to an instance of the method and system disclosed herein, the text of the instant message excluding the name of the sender may be removed from an incoming instant message. The instant...
