Disclosed is a method and system for avoiding interruptions during a presentation caused by requests for a presentation file.

When a presenter is delivering a presentation, there may be instances when other users try to send messages using an Instant Messaging (IM) system to the presenter requesting the presentation file of the presentation. These messages interrupt the presenter during the presentation.

The method and system disclosed herein detects that a presentation application is being currently used by the presenter and accordingly infers that the presentation is in progress. Accordingly, when other users try to send messages using the IM system, the other users are provided with an alert indicating that the presenter is currently delivering a presentation and are provided a link for retrieving the presentation file for the presentation. The presenter may also customize the alert displayed to the other users.

In an instance of the method and system, the presenter may manually turn on a presentation mode in the IM system. In this mode, the presenter provides a presentation file to be presented during the presentation. Accordingly, when the presentation is in progress, the method and system distributes the presentation file to the other users in response to the other users sending IM messages to the user.
