Abstract

A packing element will be constructed by embedding a metal foam/sponge into a rubber shell. The idea is to provide a support matrix for the rubber allowing the packing element to withstand higher pressure differentials as well as higher temperatures. A standard packing element will be developed from a composite metal foam-polymer (rubber) material. It will operate identically to existing packing elements, but will have the metal foam matrix embedded for an increase in stability at higher pressures and temperatures
