Disclosed is a method and system for assigning weights to status updates.

In a social networking website, due to an overwhelming number of status updates, a user may sometimes miss status updates from other users. Status updates from other users in a network are generally displayed as news feed to the user. The other users are unable to control the order in which status updates are displayed to the user.

The method and system disclosed herein enables a user to assign weights to status updates. Weights assigned to status updates denote an order in which the status updates are displayed to other users sharing a network with the user in the social network website. For example if a user has a higher priority status update that should be displayed to the other users, a higher weight is assigned to the higher priority status update. The weight may be user defined or may be selected from a set of predefined values.

For example, a user may post multiple status updates pertaining to deadlines, which are to be displayed to a client sharing a network with the user on a social networking website. Accordingly, the user may assign weights to the status updates based on the deadlines. Subsequently, the status updates are displayed in an order corresponding to the weights assigned. Hence, the client may view the status updates in the order of deadlines.
