Abstract

When multiple users are listening to music (e.g. in a vehicle), the listeners often share the same taste in some genres of music but not others. When listening to a music device with albums and playlists customized to the tastes of the owner of the device, many of the songs played will not be ideal for most of the members of the listening audience. Inventions like the Apple iTunes Genius and the Music Genome Project, currently utilized by the music service Pandora, have revolutionized music playlists. Using these services, a user can select a song, album, or artist that they want to hear and a customized playlist will be built for the user. A system is needed to create playlists in a similar manner for everyone in the listening area.

Intelligent multi-person music playlists

When multiple users are listening to music (e.g. in a vehicle), the listeners often share the same taste in some genres of music but not others. When listening to a music device with albums and playlists customized to the tastes of the owner of the device, many of the songs played will not be ideal for most of the members of the listening audience.

Inventions like the Apple iTunes® Genius and the Music Genome Project®, currently utilized by the music service Pandora®, have revolutionized music playlists. Using these services, a user can select a song, album, or artist that they want to hear and a customized playlist will be built for the user. A system is needed to create playlists in a similar manner for everyone in the listening area.

The following diagram describes a potential embodiment of this invention where a local protocol is used to transfer an Apple iTunes ID, which is used as the unique identifier to query the Genius service:

Note that the playlist doesn't necessarily have to only be created from music that exists on the DJ device. If using an online radio service like Pandora, the playlist could be generated and then used to create an optimal list regardless of whether the music exists on the DJ or not.
