Method Of Parallelizing XML Parsing, Validation, Serialization, Navigation, Transforming And Construction Through Database Partitioning

The invention, as disclosed,

XML operations and improves performance.

The amount of semi-structured and/or non-structured data has grown very rapidly in the past 10 years and XML technology has proved to be a good way to describe and represent these data. Now, DB2 defines, stores and manages XML documents natively inside its engine, together with relational data. DB2 provides very rich and flexible language interfaces (SQL/XML, XQUERY) for application development.

An XML

application leverages the existing database engine functionalities such as transaction protection and security policy right away;

whereas, relational data and XML data

co-exist, directly and conveniently interacting with each other inside the engine to efficiently solve more complex business problems.

The following six industry standardized XML operations are critical to the successful deployment of XML technology through a database engine. They are also expensive for central processing unit (CPU) and I/O execution.

1. Parse the string format XML into the tree format XML

2.

3. Serialize the tree format XML into the string format XML

4. Navigate the tree format XML to return a sequence made of atomic values node references that match the given xpath

5. Transform the tree format XML from one tree to another tree

6. Construct a new tree format XML

DB2, as an XML/relational hybrid engine, internally parallelizes these six expensive XML operations in order to achieve the optimal and scalable perfo...
