Abstract

Hearing instruments are made from plastic material. Currently, In-The-Ear (ITE) hearing instruments have to be removed sometimes by the user to clean and dry it for preventing bacteria and fungi growth. For an easy cleaning, hearing instruments are made from glossy plastic. To achieve this shell texture, thorough buffing has to be done during the manufacturing process of ITEs. For Behind-The-Ear (BTE) hearing instruments sweat protector accessories are provided, but these are bulky and mostly used on children’s hearing aids.

For ITEs a novel changeable antibacterial laminate is proposed. The laminate is made of a thin, soft, and stretchable material. When it is applied to the hearing instrument, it covers the center area, which is in contact with the user's ear walls. It fits comfortable to the hearing instrument following its contours. The material is made from an existing antibacterial composition bonded on a stretchable substrate. This material provides the antibacterial property for ITE hearing instruments and earmolds.
