Abstract

A method and system is provided to track optimization activities in a distributed server environment. Each IT data resource that is to be tracked is assigned a standard IT data definition. IT data resources are processed in three stages of IT instrumentation and logical data flow. The three stages include IT Asset Optimization Collection Framework (OCF), Canonical Historical IT Asset Data Store (CHADS), and Temporal Analytic Analysis (TAA).

Disclosed is a method and system for tracking optimization activities in a distributed server environment, such as an IT environment. The optimization activities may include content change actions such as removal of physical compute resources from the IT environment, push and pull actions, and legacy growth.

In an instance, each IT data resource that is to be tracked is assigned a standard IT data definition. A Unique Identifier (UID) is assigned to each IT Resource Data Point (RDP). The IT data resources are processed in three stages of IT instrumentation and logical data flow. The three stages include:

IT Asset Optimization Collection Framework (OCF)

Canonical Historical IT Asset Data Store (CHADS)

Temporal Analytic Analysis (TAA)

The Figure exemplarily illustrates the three stages, including the IT Asset OCF, the CHADS, and the TAA. The IT Asset OCF drives the collection of IT data resources. The IT RDPs and metrics associated with the IT RDPs such as the metrics assigned to processor, memory, networking, and disk usage, are used for measuring usage of IT data resource at any point in time in the IT environment. The IT Asset OCF subscribes to the IT RDPs and documents the IT RDPs for periodic retrieval. The IT RDPs are subscribed to, based on an Apparatus Policy Management (APM) system. Thereafter, the IT RDP is retrieved at predefined intervals for retention and long term representation for handoff to the CHADS.

Once the IT RDPs have been subscribed to, the metrics associated with the RDPs are passed to an IT Asset Data Collection and Aggregation (ADCA) component for processing. The ADCA component matches the metrics associated with the IT RDPs and its associated UIDs based on the APM policy. Here, the APM policy is governed by specific IT technology, client priorities, and business optimization drivers. The IT RDP to UID mappings enables consolidating the IT RDP's resource metrics for future optimization and analytics within the apparatus. The UID is used to track the IT data resource during processing and is required for persistent usage over a period of time.

The key subset of the UIDs is received from the IT Asset OCF and passed to the CHADS for long term representation of the Resource State (RS).
