Integrated high-availability route management

Disclosed is a system and method for managing routing information for geographically distributed load-balanced servers that integrates the management of the routes into general-purpose high-availability packages utilizing remote decision making.

Often custom software or scripts were used to manage routing information for geographically distributed load-balanced servers. Typically the custom software (scripts) managed the routes for each application that needed them and required an application and network specialists to utilize the scripts correctly.

Integrating this knowledge into a general purpose high-availability (HA) management infrastructure expands the actual utilization of route-based load balancing technique out of the realm of a relatively few sophisticated networking specialists into a much broader usage.

This general purpose HA management infrastructure tracks the current operational status of a plurality of servers. A subset of these servers are designated to receive IP-based networking traffic for some given application. These designated servers are called the operational set. When membership in the operational set changes either through server failures, server restorations, or changes in configuration, the HA infrastructure informs a routing resource management component.
