Abstract

Disclosed is a method for detecting and displaying the actual speed of the small form-factor pluggable (SFP) as it is being plugged into a port on a switch. The system incorporates the use of a light-emitting diode (LED) on the front part of the SFP to indicate the operational speed of the SFP. The invention works by adding a default loop back circuit inside the SFP.

Detection and displaying the actual speed of a small form-factor pluggable (SFP) (i.e., 2GB, 4GB, 8GB or 10GB) is conducted while it is being plugged into a port on a switch. Thus, users can easily detect that an SFP is working at a particular speed while it is being plugged into a port on a switch by physically looking at the SFP.

The invention incorporates a light-emitting diode (LED) on the front part of the SFP that will indicate the operational speed of the SFP. The invention operates in such a way that the LED lights up and displays the actual operational speed of the SFP while the SFP is plugged into a port on the switch and it is operating properly. With the LED light on the SFP displaying the operational speed of the SFP, users can easily detect the actual operational speed of the SFP (i.e., 2GB, 4GB, 8GB or 10GB) by physically looking at the SFP while it is being plugged into a port on the switch.

The invention works by adding a default loop back circuit inside the SFP. The method transmits an electrical signal from the port on the switch. On plug-in, the SFP loops back internally until it detects the electrical signal being transmitted from the port on the switch.

Electrical signal transmission comes from the port in copper and goes out in optical signal. The optical signal splits and goes back to the receiver which reproduces the message received from the optical signal. As long as the receiver is detecting primitives, then the LED light on the SFP turns on and displays the actual operational speed of the SFP (i.e., 2GB, 4GB, 8GB or 10GB). The LED will be located on the receiving side of the SFP.
