Microprocessor Socket Cover Removal Tool

Microprocessor sockets based on the land grid array (LGA) concept contain very fragile contacts on the socket that are very susceptible to damage. This damage has turned into an industry quality problem for x86 servers. While part of the damage is linked to poor processor installation and removal procedures, it has also been found that removal of the socket covers can contribute to socket contact damage. This problem must be addressed in the industry.

One solution that has been used is that of a socket cover removal tool. However, this separate stand alone tool adds yet another part to processor option. What is needed a more simplified and consolidated solution.

The disclosed solution is a plastic tool which is integrated into a processor installation tool and can be used to remove the processor socket cover without risking damage to the contacts. The tool also serves to hold the processor in the tool while the parts are shipped. (The processor installation tool design into which this cover removal tool integrates has been disclosed separately.) The socket cover removal tool snaps into the features of the processor installation tool. The cover removal tool also serves to ensure the microprocessor remains in the processor installation tool during shipping.

The steps involved in utilizing the integrated socket cover removal tool and base processor installation follow:
1. Unlatch and rotate the load plate locking lever on the Integrated Load Module (ILM)

2. Rotate the load plate to the open position to provide access to the socket cover
3. Lower the processor installation tool / socket cover tool combination towards the socket

4. Locate the tabs on the socket cover removal tool into the slots in the socket cover until the tabs snap
