Abstract

Cloud computing claims to offer financial and operational benefits, however it is a very new paradigm for all but the IT technologists. It presents challenges to decision makers when deciding how to invest in technology and where. It also presents challenges to administrators interested in monitoring and controlling their enterprise environments, especially if these are hybrid. Hybrid cloud environments have the potential of becoming increasingly complex, considering that many businesses may have for example a combination of B2B technologies, mobile applications, other remote systems, or legacy systems. This publication addresses some of these concerns by proposing a mechanism to extract monitoring/management data from multiple cloud vendor implementations. Once the monitoring/management data is extracted it could be canonicalized and imported to modelling tools in order to analyze and model any hybrid cloud environment. This approach would allow businesses to make informed decisions in order to maximize their return on investment.

Our understanding of the term distributed is expanding. When you are dealing with remote and third party software and hardware, as would be the case with hybrid cloud solutions, you need to work out the most efficient way of using these services. In addition, it would be beneficial to be able to predict the impact of changes, in topology, vendor, as well as Qualities of Service and performance so that the impact of different decisions can be investigated.

    A business may have applications running off-premise, on-premise, mobile devices, together with a process that incorporates a business partner. There is also a dynamic aspect to these topologies - they can change over time, due to automated provisioning logic, or at specific periods due to business events. For example, changes to the amount of server capacity may need to be made to cater for holiday season sales, as traffic is expected to go up.

    The question is how does a business monitor and control these multi-vendor and multi-location environments, as well as make design decisions on further investment so that they know they are getting the most out of these new complex systems and relationships.

    It is important to be able to gather data from across the hybrid cloud into a single format and point of control. An integration component is first required to gather and organise this data. Once you have a model for gathering operational data about the hybrid cloud, a 'what...
