Disclosed is a method and system for monitoring mobile objects using Global Positioning System (GPS) and smart phone technology. Examples of mobile objects may include, but are not limited to, vehicles and individuals enabled with smart phones. The method and system utilizes GPS technology to locate positions of one or more mobile objects of a group of mobile objects and uses smart phones to communicate the positions of the one or more mobile objects to other mobile objects of the group.

Fig. 1 illustrates the method and system for monitoring mobile objects (device 1 through
4) using GPS and smart phone technology. The method includes a group of mobile objects registered with a GPS service provider, wherein each mobile object is associated with a smart phone. The GPS service provider is in communication with the smart phones and all the mobile objects are in communication with each other through respective smart phones as illustrated in Fig. 1.

The method includes determining location of each mobile object using the GPS service. This may be achieved by providing a GPS Service Application Programming Interface( API) to request the locations. Once determined, the location of each mobile object may be broadcasted to one or more other mobile objects as text messages through the smart phone. Upon receiving the location information, the location information is displayed at one or more other mobile objects. Location information of a mobile object (e.g. device 1) may be displayed as follows:

Fig. 2 illustrates an exemplary display panel showing real time attributes of all the mobile objects (device 1 through device 4) such as location and distance from a particular mobile device.

The method and system is implemented using standard GPS Service API's that are defined for all GPS service provider to provide the location of the GPS devices in standard format. Also, the standard smart phone API's are used read the phone text message and incoming phone number. The method and system further utilizes an algorithm to calculate a central location of the group and broadcast the same to one or more mobile objects of the group.
