Method and System for Selectively Cloning a Specific Application or Application Data

Disclosed is a method and system for selectively cloning a specific application or application data.

Fig. 1 illustrates a method for selectively cloning a specific application or application data. The method involves generating a list of applications installed on a system when an image is to be cloned. An Application Watcher (AW) agent may be installed on the system to monitor and collect information associated with the installation of an application and other application data files on a base image. A user may then select one or more applications from the list to create a backup image. Based on the user's selection, the AW agent performs a copy action to copy the selected applications and the data files associated with the selected applications to a clone image. The essential information corresponding to each application along with the user configuration of the applications may be stored in a central repository to enable copying of the selected applications. In addition, the registry file with only the selected applications is copied to the clone image. On performing the copy actions, the AW agent uninstalls the un-selected applications and their data by locating the physical addresses of these applications on the hard disk. Thus, when the clone image is copied, cloned, or restored, the un-selected applications and their associated data are no longer stored on the newly cloned image or the hard disk of the system.
