Automatic Image File Generation based upon Operating System Repository Needs

Disclosed is a system and method to extend an Operating System (OS) image repository to provide dynamic generation of system images based upon a user request.

With the improved density of media storage and multiple processor cores, the utilization of system images to facilitate running in a known environment is become quite important. It is desirable to manage the collection of images in such a way as to promote re-usability. A user may wish to run a specific OS image and that exact image may not exist in the repository. What is needed is a means for the repository system to request managed machines that fit the request to automatically build and image and have it submitted to the repository.

With an existing facility to produce a base operating system image, called an Operating System Image Management System (OSIMS), the OSIMS is enhanced to provide interfaces and support for:

Providing a profile of itself (e.g version of the OS, the software components installed, etc) and making a request to managed systems (systems that are centrally managed in a network by common administrative authorities) to provide a profile. The support can be run either as an "after hours batch request" or as a synchronous action based upon a user query with inadequate results,
Building an image of itself.

Submit a image of itself to the OSIMS along with any required metadata.

Figure 1 shows these steps in a flow:

3 - Send Profile

4 - Request Image Creation/Submission
