Disclosed is a method and system for updating software and program license aware files in an Operating System(OS) image.

Fig. 1A and Fig. 1B illustrate a method of managing an OS image. The method involves initially checking whether a task is a software installation or a de-installation to the system image. If the task is related to software installation to the system image, then a check is performed to identify whether an OS support is present for the software to be installed. If an OS is not present, the method terminates. Further, if an OS is present, then an installation script for the selected software is reviewed. In response to this review, a list of files to be changed and added may be compiled. Thereafter, the method verifies whether the files to be changed are in a target system. To identify whether the files are present in the target system, the Table of Contents (TOC) file is examined. The files to be changed in the system image are then copied to a local file space. Subsequently, an installation script is performed on these files in the local file space. The changed files are then copied back into a system image raw archive file. Subsequently, the TOC, a system registry file or an equivalent file are also updated.
