Method and System for Associating Social Networks with Television

Disclosed is a method and system for associating social networks with television controlling device. The association between the social networks and the television controlling device facilitates recommendations regarding television programs that a user may be interested in watching. The recommendations may be provided based on predefined preferences of the user.

Fig. 1A and Fig. 1B illustrate a method and system for facilitating recommendation of television programs by associating a social network and a television controlling device, such as, a Set Top Box (STB). The social network may be associated with the STB by pre-registering the STB with the social network. As a result, when a user switches on the television, the user may automatically logon to the social network through the STB when the user switches on the television. In another scenario, the user may manually logon to the social network after switching on the television. Once logged in, the social network server receives data from other associated STBs associated with the social network. The received data may include one or more of, but is not limited to, television programs running on the STBs and web pages viewed on the STBs. After receiving the data, the social network maps the viewing data, such as, programs to other users and groups within the social network.
