Disclosed is a method and system for preventing overbooking of free time in a calendar and scheduling system. The overbooking of free time is prevented based on the number of unread emails in an inbox of the user.

Calendar and Scheduling systems enable a user to book appointments with other users. Calendaring and scheduling systems allow a user to view and book free time slots of
the other users in the same organization. A user may select a free time slot on their calendaring and scheduling system and book an appointment with another user by selecting the free time slot of the other user. In an instance, when a user returns from a vacation, the user may have unread mails and work to be attended which may not be considered by the calendaring and scheduling system while indicating the free time slot for the user. This may result in overbooking of free time for the user. Therefore there is a need for setting rules on the calendaring and scheduling system to prevent overbooking free time of the user.

The method and system disclosed herein involves setting a rule on a calendaring and scheduling system to prevent other users from booking appointments in the indicated free time slots when the unread mails in the user's inbox exceeds a predetermined threshold number. The free time slots in the calendaring and scheduling system are grayed out on exceeding the predetermined threshold number of unread mails. This prevents other users from overbooking the free time slots of a user.

The method and system disclosed herein provides a User Interface (UI) enabling the user to specify the threshold number of unread emails, based on which overbooking of the free time slots is prevented. Fig. 1 illustrates the UI in accordance with an exemplary instance of the method and system.
