Abstract

The invention is a method and system for computer systems wakeup from standby status via normal network access is disclosed. This technique proposes a method for waking up computer system from standby status after receiving normal network request. This technique allows computer system to reduce overall power consumption without affecting the end user. This innovation ideas is to add the wakeup logic process in network adapter, and wakeup server as needed, that is when there is a request to the server, the network adapter process logic will decide whether it is a request to running application on the server, and if yes, wakeup the server, and when there is no request access to the server, the server will enter the sleep state, in this way we can greatly save the energy and make server only works when there is a need. With this method, Compute system can be put into standby status as more as possible and much energy will be saved

Background

Green is a very hot topic nowadays. System owner can utilize the standby mechanism to save energy when the computer system is idle. And computer system needs to be wakening up first before it can be put into service again.

However, wake up the computer system is hard for end user due to the following drawback:
¡§ End user need to know the system network card or modem or the out of band management device detail information.
¡§ End user need to know the router information if he want to wake up the system in the different LAN.
¡§ System owner can not wake up the system as needed as he does not know when there is a request to wakeup the system.

For these reasons, system owner will not let the system enter standby status even if it is completely idle, and no energy can be saved. We need a solution to make the wakeup system easier and make sure system is waked up only when needed.

1. Innovation Solution Architecture

The public method uses a small kernel which will keep running in network card or memory. The small kernel only needs to have the network accessibility. Then computer system can

receive normal network request even when it is in the standby status.

The public method includes functionality that is standardized by the following specifications:

¡§ End user sends network request to the computer system, such as the database request, web request.
¡§ The network card receives the network request packages.
¡§ The network card filters some packages like broadcast packages at the TCP/IP protocol layer two or layer three.
¡§ The network card wakes up the computer system if the packages need to use the computer system resource. ¡§ Computer system processes and responses the end user's request as the normal process.
