Abstract

The main purpose of this invention is to use this system to choke or isolate flow inside a tubing or casing string. Depending on which fluid you want the swelling packer to activate in you select either oil or water swelling compound for the polymer blend. Additionally the packers swelling time can be increased by using diffusion barriers less permeable to the activating fluid as outer layers. The device will be exposed to swelling fluid and swell against itself to choke or stop flow as shown in the figures below. Combining swellable packers with a device to hold the packer in place inside the tubing or casing can also be used as shown figures below. This can for example be used to shut of water coming into a section of a sub-terrainian well.

INTRODUCTION:

When a sub-terrainian wellbore is produced it is very often hard to selectively control the fluids or gas entering the well. It is not uncommon that wells that still produce large amounts of hydrocarbons will have to be shut in because water is dominating the production. The industry has a number of different devices and methods to prevent unwanted fluids to enter the wellbore.

This paper describes a method & apparatus/mechanism that automatically choke or shut of flow in a wellbore.

IMPROVEMENTS OVER PRIOR ART - CURRENT TECHNOLOGY

Prior art exist that shut of flow in a wellbore. Most of them require intervention. This can be placing packers, plugs, injection of fluids that seal formation etc. Other methods are also known where pre installed tools like ICVs, sliding sleeves, ICC is used. These methods are costly and intervention is costly, prevents production during operations and risky.
