Abstract

Disclosed is a resinous composition comprising (a) a siloxane-alkenyl aromatic copolymer comprising structural units derived from (i) a functionalized polysiloxane, (ii) at least one alkenyl aromatic monomer, (iii) at least one monoethylenically unsaturated nitrile monomer and, optionally (iv) at least one (C1-C12)alkyl- or (C6-C20)aryl-(meth)acrylate monomer; (b) a rubber modified thermoplastic resin selected from ASA, acrylate-modified ASA and mixtures thereof, and optionally (c) at least one alkenyl aromatic copolymer different from the siloxane-alkenyl aromatic copolymer (a), wherein the alkenyl aromatic copolymer (c) comprises structural units derived from at least one alkenyl aromatic monomer, at least one monoethylenically unsaturated nitrile monomer and, optionally, at least one (C1-C12)alkyl- or (C6-C20)aryl-(meth)acrylate monomer. Articles prepared from the composition are also disclosed.

[0001] The present invention relates to compositions comprising a siloxane-alkenyl aromatic copolymer and a rubber modified thermoplastic resin. 

[0002]  Commercially available grades of rubber modified thermoplastic resins, such as acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) resins comprising a butadiene rubber, often exhibit good impact strength both at room temperature and at low temperature, and also acceptable scratch/mar resistance properties while maintaining useful thermal and mechanical properties.  However, such rubber modified thermoplastic resins comprising a butadiene rubber have poor weatherability.  In contrast, rubber modified thermoplastic resins comprising an acrylate rubber, such as acrylate-styrene-acrylonitrile (ASA) resins, typically show good out-door weatherability but often have low impact strength, particularly at low temperature.  There is a need for resinous compositions comprising rubber modified thermoplastic resins which exhibit good impact strength both at room temperature and at low temperature, and in addition have acceptable scratch/mar resistance properties and good weatherability. 

[0003]  U.S. Patent 5,457,167 teaches compositions of polyorganosiloxane-type thermoplastic resins.  However, preparation of these polyorganosiloxane-type thermoplastic resins requires the use of additional comonomers to improve the crosslink density of the rubber latex before grafting to form the final thermoplastic resin.  The use of unnecessary comonomers presents undesirable economic and process complications.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION

[0004] The present inventors have discovered rubber modified thermoplastic resin compositions which exhibit good impact strength both at room temperature and at low temperature, and which also have attractive scratch/mar resistance properties and good weatherability.  In one particular embodiment the present invention relates to a resinous composition comprising (a) a siloxane-alkenyl aromatic copolymer comprising structural units derived from (i) a functionalized polysiloxane, (ii) at least one alkenyl aromatic monomer, (iii) at least one monoethylenically unsaturated nitrile monomer and, optionally (iv) at least one (C1-C12)alkyl- or (C6-C20)aryl-(meth)acrylate monomer; (b) a rubber modified thermoplastic resin selected from ASA, acrylate-modified ASA and mixtures thereof, and optionally (c) at least one alkenyl aromatic copolymer different from the siloxane-alkenyl aromatic copolymer (a), wherein the alkenyl aromatic copolymer (c) comprises structural ...
