Abstract

The purpose of this work was to evaluate the formulation possibilities with new silicone organic elastomer gels. The composition of these new blends and their use in Personal Care have been described in patent WO 2010/080755. The particularity of these new elastomer gels is their ability to incorporate water and polar solvents in the gel matrix while keeping the unique texture and sensory of silicone elastomer gels. The purpose of this work was to evaluate the formulation possibilities using these new elastomer gels as well as the possible combinations with a broad range of cosmetic ingredients covering all types of applications such as skin and body creams, lipsticks, foundations, compact powders, shower gels, shampoos, conditioners and so on …. It was demonstrated that it was possible to formulate these novel elastomer gels in all types of formulations and that they were also very easy to use and in some cases were providing new types of texture and feel that were not possible with the current commercial materials. Although not preferred, silicone elastomer gels described in patents US0768064 and US5969035 could be used instead of the new elastomer gels to make similar formulations in most of the case.

Introduction:

Silicone elastomer gels have been around for more than 15 years and became very popular in skin care products thanks to the unique sensory feel they were providing to the consumer. One of the issues with these materials was their incompatibility with organic materials making them sometimes a challenge to formulate.      A second generation was then developed, called silicone organic elastomer blends with improved compatibility with organic ingredients such as esters and organic sunscreens but still keeping the unique feel.  The missing part was the possibility to incorporate water and polar materials. Several materials were developed which were able to reach that goal but at the expense of the texture and feel. The new silicone organic elastomer gels  used in the present work were designed to achieve the best balance between the ability to incorporate water and polar ingredients with or without actives and texture and feel. This ability has been described in patent number WO2010080755. The purpose of this work was to evaluate the formulations possibilities using these new elastomer gels as well as the possible combinations with a broad range of cosmetic ingredients covering all types of applications such as skin and body creams, lipsticks, foundations, compact powders, shower gels, shampoos, conditioners and so on ….
