A method and system is disclosed for efficiently debugging complex application for a defect.

Usually, a defect that is logged by a functional tester might contain details such as input data used on a test system, expected output and actual output. However, based on this information a developer cannot look at existing application logs generated by the functional tester since the application logs are being continuously updated/generated by the same functional tester or other functional testers accessing the same test system. Further, a developer has to reproduce the problem in their local environment and then look at their local logs to understand and debug the problem. Due to the abovementioned shortcomings, the debugging process generally is very long and complicated for most applications of serious size and complexity.

The method disclosed herein enables an automated functional testing tool to generate and insert in real-time any failure related data into relevant logs of an application server. Besides inserting failure data into the relevant logs at an exact location of occurrence, the automated function testing tool also generates an ID that ties the location in the log to a corresponding defect that is created in a defect tracking system.

The figure shows an exemplary scenario where an automated function testing tool is testing a web based application.
