Method and Tool of Comparing Data Files in iSeries

Disclosed is a method and tool for comparing data files in iSeries regardless of number of characters/keys in each record.

In migration project, testers have to run two different applications with same input and perform data comparison to conclude that both applications are giving the same output or not. In iSeries, there is a command "CMPPFM" to compare source code and data comparison but output comes in a report which cannot be used further. Even if, the output is put in an out file, only first 180 characters of that file come and rest characters are truncated. Therefore, reading the records from the report is bit tedious.

To address the above issue, a new tool is developed, which facilitates developers, testers and Operational team members to compare physical or logical file data in AS400 environment with a command.

A physical file is a database file that contains data records. The data records are grouped into physical file members and each member has its own access path to the data. Whereas, a logical file is a database file that describes how data records contained in one or more physical files are presented to a program. The logical file does not contain data records. The data records are contained in the physical files associated with the logical file.

This command is useful to compare before/after file contents for example, following a system conversion or during a parallel run. The compare is at field level. Records are compared based on 'Relative Record number'.

For illustration purpose following figures show screenshots of the tool. In order to work with the tool following command is executed from command prompt in AS400 environment.

Call WRKCMPFILE

In response to executing the above command a screen as shown in fig.1 is displayed.

In the screen as shown in fig.1, a user has to provide information about the Physical or Logical file name, library name and the member name. In output field, if user wants to put the difference report in physical file then '*OUTFILE' is entered otherwise '*' is entered. In c...
