Abstract

Disclosed is a patient tracking and monitoring system to be used in medical care settings. The system incorporates radio frequency identification (RFID) tags along with a series of sensors connecting to a central server in order to ensure that medical charts, IVs, medications, etc. are always associated with the correct patient. If a patient is within a certain proximity to a medical item not associated with them, then an alarm alerts medical personnel.

According to the Institute of Medicine, medical mistakes are responsible for

44,000-98,000 deaths per year, resulting in $29 billion dollars in losses. (1)

The disclosed solution potentially eliminates patient medical chart, prescription, and IV errors by relying on a system of sensors and electronic labels, such as, but not limited to, printable radio frequency identification (RFID) tags to validate on a defined basis that only a single set of electronic labels are within a defined proximity to the patient.

Current methods for tracking and verifying patient medical charts are largely manual, unreliable for information integrity, and subject to human error. No known approaches offer the same solution as disclosed here.

The disclosed solution is a system and method for continually validating that the medical records, IVs, prescriptions, equipment, etc.

Using a central server, a wireless frequency is emitted to the sensor worn by the patient requesting validation that the electronically labeled items surrounding the patient are indeed the patient's items. The sensor emits a frequency that reaches a defined radius from the patient and confirms that all the electronic labels (sensors) in the defined radius have the same unique identifier as the patient. Results are returned back to the central server, and if any electronic labels (sensors)
