Method to Build Groups Based on User Content Consumption

Many web-based applications track a user's consumption of content. For example, music websites track the music selections of its users; other sites track a user's access to links provided by other users or the consumption of video content. In most systems the tracking information is leveraged to suggest relevant additional or future content to the user.

There is no mechanism to leverage consumption information of users on a system in order to suggest or build collaborative groups or communities of users.

No relevant art exists that addresses forming user groups based on tracked content consumption.

The core idea of the disclosed invention is to leverage user content consumption behavior on a system in order to facilitate the definition and establishment of collaborative groups.

The invention employs the notion of configurable biased intersection. The method achieves configurable biased intersection by establishing the intersection set of one individual who has consumed information of an arbitrary topic with the intersection set of another individual. The process scores and rates the intersection set based on significant biases. Biases such as behaviors over time are significant parameters to help establish relevance.

For example, when an expression of interest for a particular type of information happens in isolation, then the system assigns a low rating despite the fact that the intersection occurred. Likewise, in a preferred embodiment, the method exploits temporal bias as a significant parameter to establish relevance. For example, whether an expression of interest for a particular type of information happened several times but a significant amount of time has passed, or more recently but in isolation, the system assigns a low rating in either case.

During implementation of the invention, the system:
1. Tracks a user's consumption behavior
2. Analyzes behavior patterns to locate matches
3. Suggests or builds a collaborative group at appropriate times

The system suggests a collaborative group by:
1. Motivating the group based on notifications. Here, one of the notification parameters is an established optimal group size. Based on the optimal size and the responses...
