Disclosed is a method and system for adding and tracking To-Dos in chat applications. Chat applications are widely used as a collaboration tool for geographically dispersed users. Normally, chat applications provide means for exchanging messages, video/audio chat, sharing files and arranging conferences.

The method and system disclosed herein allows a user to add and track To-Dos in a chat application. A user may add To-Dos corresponding to a contact in the chat application. The To-Dos may be entered in a text box. The user may also add a target date with each To- Do item. The contacts in the chat application which have been assigned a To-Do list may be distinguished from other contacts by using visual indicators.

Alternatively, a user may attach tags with messages during a chat session to create To-Dos. For example, a user may attach tags such as

to one or more messages in a chat session. The method and system disclosed herein scans the chat, parses the attached tags and retrieves the corresponding messages. The retrieved messages are then displayed against the user in the contact list.

In another embodiment of the invention TO-Dos may be assigned to an offline contact. The TO-Dos added to the offline contact are stored on the chat server such that the contact may be notified of the assigned TO-Dos on coming online.
