Disclosed is a method and system for sharing and comparing user interests through e-mail and Instant Messaging (IM). The method and system includes setting up a user's interest profile for a user of e-mail or IM. Setting up of the user's interest profiles may include providing an interface to the user that displays a list of the various user interests. The various user interests may include, for example, but are not limited to, hobbies, personal interests, professional interests, professional competencies, likes, dislikes, etc. corresponding to the user.

Once the list of various user interests is displayed to the user, the user may select the interests that are applicable to the user using, for example, check boxes. Thereafter, the user may save the selected user interests as the user's interest profile. The user's interest profiles may be stored in one or more of a user's e-mail, user's IM client and an e-mail database. Alternatively, the user's interest profiles may be saved in a central repository that may be queried by the user's e-mail or IM client.

Subsequently, when the user exchanges an e-mail or IM with a recipient, the user's e-mail or IM client includes user interest information encoded in the e-mail or IM to be decoded by the recipient's e-mail or IM client.
