A method and system for promoting user interaction and engagement on websites is disclosed.  The method includes rewarding a user who interacts with other users on a website by increasing attention that the user receives from other users on the website.

Description

Typically, users engage in website-beneficial activities by contributing content and interacting with other users on the website through comments, ratings, and reviews.  In return, the users contributing content and interacting with users expect attention from other users on their content.  For instance, if a user contributes comments on various blogs, the user might benefit from attention from other users for the blogs that are owned by the user.  The attention that the user seeks and (possibly) receives may include, for example, a rating or a comment.  The website benefits when many users engage significantly with the website, for which it is necessary to promote interaction amongst users.

Disclosed is a method and system for promoting user interaction and engagement on websites.  The method and system incentivize users to not just receive attention which benefits them, but also to contribute attention to other users to increase users’ engagement, which in turn benefits the website.  The method includes rewarding a user for interacting with other users on a website by increasing the attention that the user receives from other users on the website.  Specifically, the method and system as disclosed herein rewards a user for engaging in website-beneficial activities by increasing the probability of the user receiving (good, i.e., non-spam) attention from other users on content owned by the user on web.  A mathematical model is proposed that determines the reward provided to a user for taking part in website beneficial activities.  According to the mathematical model, a user is rewarded by ensuring that the probability of the user receiving attention from other users is proportional to an amount of contribution made by the user, including interaction with the other users.  Thus, if a user seeks attention , while a contribution from the user of the form would be beneficial to the website, the user is rewarded by ensuring that the probability of receiving large (what the user wants) is proportional to the magnitude of (what the website wants from the user).  Further, u and u' will vary in their scope from one application to another application.  For instance, an application may want the user to interact with other users in addition to contributing content.  Thus, based on the application-specific forms of u and u', the mathematical model may also vary.
