DETAILED DESCRIPTION

Generally, image registration is a technique of establishing a common geometric reference frame between two or more image data sets. Typically in medical imaging, image registration enables the incorporation of preoperative image information in a surgical setting to improve image-guided surgery and therapy. Further, image registration aids in diagnosis by allowing the concurrent use of information from multiple data sets. Data sets may be taken at various time periods using different modalities and patient positions.

There exist a number of conventional techniques for image registration, such as statistical techniques, computational fluid dynamics and various warping techniques. One such conventional technique comprises a class of warping strategies based on continuum and fluid mechanics, in which one tries to use

properties of elastic materials to determine deformation. According to another conventional technique, an intensity-based non rigid registration algorithm is used in a regularization term to constrain the deformation.

Image registration is one of the key areas that need to be addressed for solving a number of practical imaging problems. Hence there is a need in the art for a...
