Method and System for Enabling a User to Perform a Search on Privately Owned Data of other Users

Disclosed is a method and system for enabling a user to perform a search on privately owned data of other users. The privately owned data may include Email messages, and Instant messages (IM).

In accordance with the method and system disclosed herein, a user is facilitated to search for a relevant piece of information in Email messages logs and IM logs owned by the user and other users as well. In a scenario, the user is restricted to search email messages logs and IM logs owned by other users where the user is either a sender or one of receipts of the Email messages and the IM. Accordingly, a user may search a relevant piece of information in Email messages logs and the IM logs where the user has necessary access privileges.

In an exemplary implementation of the method and system disclosed herein, each user is required to index their Email messages and IM archives. Further, each email message and IM is associated with an access list. An access list for an email message and an IM includes a sender ID and one or more recipients IDs. Such an index along with access lists is stored on a server.

Subsequently, when a user performs a search for a relevant piece of information using a set of keywords, a search result is displayed to the user as shown in fig. 1
