Method and System for Detecting and Removing Repetitive Content within an Email Message

Disclosed is a method and system for detecting and removing repetitive content within an email message.

Typically, when a long email thread is forwarded to a new recipient, duplicate content such as, disclaimers or attachments which make the message larger and add clutter are also forwarded as part of the email thread. Additionally, some email systems automatically append such disclaimers for regulatory or compliance purposes thereby increasing redundant data.

The method and system disclosed herein involves intercepting inbound or outbound email messages and parsing the email messages to detect repetitive content elements such as, disclaimers and/or footers, etc. Subsequently, all occurrences of the repetitive content elements except the first occurrence are extracted into a more condensed form replacing the duplicate content with a pointer to the first occurrence. Thereafter, the condensed email message is sent to the recipient with reduced payload and clutter.

Thus, the method and system disclosed herein reduces the size and clutter of email messages by removing redundant elements. The method may also be applied to attachments and signature files to substantially reduce the payload of email messages.
