A method and system is disclosed for detecting frauds while weighting items on self check out point of sale (POS) in shops.

While weighing an item on a scale, it is essential to place the item at the center of the scale for obtaining an accurate reading. Therefore, in instances, where the item is placed away from the center of the scale, placed partially over the scale or hold/supported by a shopper, the scale misrepresents the weight of the item. These limitations can be exploited by shoppers and may cause monetary losses to a merchant.

The system disclosed herein alerts one or more of a shopper and a shopper assistant in various instances when an item is not appropriately placed over the scale or if a shopper is holding the item while its being weighed.

In accordance with the system, level of the scale is required to be above level of surrounding support structure such that an item to be weighed is being placed on the scale could not be partially rested on the support structure without being held by the shopper. The attempt to fraudulently rest the item on the support structure would be sensed as the shopper would attempt to hold the item and / or rest the item partially in their hands or with their hands.
