Abstract

A method for detecting and alerting users of invalid Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feeds is disclosed. The method detects the invalid RSS feeds by analyzing parameters such as, metadata and text search arguments in a RSS feed request to determine whether the RSS feed request still meets the initial criteria set by the user. The method informs the user of the invalid parameters present in the RSS feed request by summarizing the error information and provides the corrective actions to the user to resolve the errors.

Method to Detect and Alert Users of Invalid RSS Feeds and Subsequently Correct the Invalid RSS Feeds

Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feeds allow users to receive information about various topics of interest. Typically, the user needs to define certain parameters such as, keywords or search arguments to retrieve the feeds of interests. However, over a period of time, the user defined parameters become less relevant as the subject matter or the topic of interest evolves thereby making the RSS feeds invalid and less relevant to the users.

Disclosed is a method for detecting and alerting users of invalid RSS feeds and subsequently informing the user of the invalid RSS feeds and the corrective actions required to resolve the errors.

The method discovers the conditions that are causing the failure in the RSS feeds. In order to determine the conditions that are causing the failure in the RSS feed, the method analyzes the parameters such as, metadata and text search arguments associated with the RSS feed request. Based on the analysis, the method determines whether the parameters still meet the initial criteria originally set by the user for receiving the RSS feeds. If the analysis indicates an outdated or incorrect RSS feed, the method notifies the user about the invalid RSS feed through a specially crafted message. The specially crafted message includes the information obtained using the analysis performed on the parameters and the RSS feed request. Further, the specially crafted message directs the user to a web page that provides additional detail on the condition found, including corrective actions. Thus, the user is able to view the summarization of the analysis performed on the parameters and the RSS feed request and read about the corrective actions for resolving the errors that are responsible to invalidating the RSS feeds.

Users from around the globe access relevant and current content that match their needs or topic of interests by availing the services of an RSS feed reader. The user may define the parameters or a search que...
