Abstract

A method and system for prolonging life of Solid State Drives (SSDs) using Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID) is disclosed. A storage controller software is deployed into a storage controller of an intermediate Hard Disk Drive (HDD), where the HDD is associated with RAID. The HDD is used to collect data updates from one or more primary SSDs for error checking and enqueuing. Thereafter, the data updates are dispatched to one or more secondary SSDs thereby synchronizing data updates between the one or more primary SSD and the one or more secondary SSDs.

As shown in Fig. 1, one or more primary SSDs are connected with one or more secondary SSDs through an intermediate Hard Disk Drive (HDD), where the HDD is part of Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID). In addition, a storage controller software is deployed into a storage controller of the HDD to collect data updates from the one or more primary SSDs and dispatch the data updates to the one or more secondary SSDs. This way the one or more secondary SSDs are synchronized with the one or more primary SSDs.

Fig. 2 illustrates the method and system of synchronizing the one or more secondary SSDs with the one or more primary SSDs using the HDD, where the HDD is part of the RAID (not shown in Fig. 2). As depicted in Fig. 2, the one or more primary SSDs may manipulate data that is then transmitted to the HDD as data updates. The data updates are stored into one or more arrays on the HDD.
