Abstract

This invention describes a method, where the weather is taking into consideration when deciding the priority of when a pedestrian is granted permission to cross an intersection. Intelligent traffic signs already given priority to vehicles in a given direction to avoid traffic congestion. The idea is to give pedestrians a higher priority when inclement weather is detected.

Method for Autonomous Weather Based Pedestrian Traffic Priority

Traditionally pedestrians crossing traffic intersections are required to wait a specific interval of time or based on traffic conditions a variable amount of time before being given priority to cross an intersection. When there is inclement weather however, this time based approach can some times be too long to wait.

During inclement weather it is desirable to decrease the amount of time that a pedestrian has to wait before being given permission to cross an intersection and increase the amount of time that the pedestrian has to cross the intersection.

Another embodiment of this invention is to increase the length of time that a pedestrian has to cross the intersection when inclement weather is present. In inclement conditions a pedestrian may require additional amount of time to cross the intersection.
