Abstract:

Using an accumulator to allow a CPO to run continuously, and periodically supply syngas from accumulator to regenerate NOx trap, as required.

 

Discussion:

Cycling the CPO catalyst off and on will significantly shorten the life of the catalyst and will cause operational problems based on the speed required of the catalyst.  However, for either a single-leg or dual leg De-NOx system, the syngas will only be required for a short percentage of the total run time.

Use an accumulator, either piston, diaphagm, or bladder, to allow the CPO to continue running even when syngas is not being used to regenerate the NOx trap.  When the gas is needed, a valve opens and either the built up pressure or an external driver forces the gas into the NOx trap, see Figure 1.

Benefits:

Allows the CPO to run constantly; allows for a smaller CPO since the syngas generation will be spread over a longer time period.  Could allow for a single leg De-NOx system if a high enough pressure or a reduced O2 exhaust could be obtained.

The accumulator could also minimize pressure fluctuations and the impact of transients, allowing a more uniform flow.
