Abstract

Many software engineering tools are consumed in service model. However, the budget for purchasing tools are limited to some small enterprises, but it is necessary to meet clients requests. Some enterprises don't pass CMMI appraisal, but their clients care a lot whether software development complies with formal processes. On one side, some enterprises need to make decision what SE tools/services should be acquired to improve software development capabilities. Furthermore, they need to know what is the compliance degree of their tools with CMMI. On the other side, the SE services/tools providers need a scientific method to tell their customers how to quantitatively or qualitatively assess a tool/service against CMMI by leveraging an automatic tool. Therefore, this disclosure builds a method and service for SE service/tool assessment and selection on customer's CMMI level requirement.

Methods and Apparatus of Serivce/Tool CMMI Compliance

     Assumptions
- Software engineering tools are consumed in service model
- The budget for purchasing tools are limited to some small enterprises, but it is necessary to meet clients requests
- Some enterprises don't pass CMMI appraisal, but their clients care a lot whether software development complies with formal processes, such as CMMI

     Problem
- On one side, some enterprises need to make decision what SE tools/services should be acquired to improve software development capabilities. Furthermore, they need to know what is the compliance degree of their tools with CMMI.
- On the other side, the SE services/tools providers need a scientific method to tell their customers how to quantitatively or qualitatively assess a tool/service against CMMI by leveraging an automatic tool.

Most software vendors just claim that their products can support some CMMI process areas in a high level function points comparison
- Case-by-case, there's no unified and scientific method to assess vendor tools' CMMI compliance degree
- Mainly on manual effort, cost intensive and error-prone
