Abstract

In some environments robots are used to load parcels within trailers. Due to the slow speed of the robots, this process is quite slow. Therefore, a novel solution is proposed in which the robot loads a set of parcels arranged in a crate instead of a single parcel. The employees fill the crates with the designated parcels. The crate is designed in such a way that the hand of the robot can take the parcels easily out of the crate. For example boxes and the crate can be provided with appropriate holes or slots for comb-like robot fingers. The pre-filled crates are then transported to the trailer by means of conveyor technology or by help of an intermediate picking-up robot. Finally, the loading robot takes the content with his hands or a gripper out of the crate and positions this content in the trailer

The advantages of the proposed solution are among others:

• The work load is performed faster by the robot because of handling a whole crate's load of parcels at once.

• The employees have a better working space because they are outside the trailer.

• Loading the crates can be done in advance so that unloading the crates in the trailer can be done just before departure time which saves time in regard to the trailer usage.
