Axial Bearing Position Adjustment

High pressure compressors with shear ring retained end heads in general come with bearing brackets on the removable end heads. The bearing brackets are assembled deep inside the compressor, so that they are difficult to disassemble and to check. The radial space often is very limited.

Nowadays the axial rotor position is adjusted by means of shims that change the distance between the axial bearing and the bearing bracket, as depicted in figure 1. The adjustment requires a full assembly of the bearing bracket with a set of thin shims to determine the right rotor position experimentally. When the rotor reaches the desired position the set of thin shims gets replaced by a single shim according to the thickness of the preinstalled set. Usually the bearing brackets are designed in a way that the top half of the bearing bracket can be dropped off in the same manner as the shim rings. As a result it is not required to remove bearing and thrust disk. If the shims can not be taken apart in two pieces, it is necessary to disassemble the bearing bracket including all parts. To reach the inner shim ring it is necessary to remove the coupling hub, the outer half part of the axial bearing, the thrust disk and the inner half part of the axial bearing.
