Method and Apparatus for Providing Segregated , Enterprise-wide Management of Multiple Aspects of System Management Across a Multi -Sysplex Enterprise

Disclosed is a method and apparatus for segregating multiple aspects of system and enterprise management across a multi-sysplex enterprise. In a sysplex, the ability to collect and consolidate data relating to multiple instances of TCP/IP stacks, IP interfaces, Telnet servers and ports, open system adapters (OSAs), HiperSockets*, applications and other elements that may occur on the several computer systems that make up the sysplex, into a single operational data repository allows for managing the sysplex and assessing its overall operational status from a single point of control - a "master" manager for the sysplex, as illustrated in Figure 1. (In all illustrations, each Data Repository is shown for simplicity as a single entity. In fact it could be made up of discrete and different types of data caches, structures, databases, etc.)

Extending that capability across multiple sysplexes allows for the management of an entire enterprise, consisting of multiple sysplexes and perhaps standalone monoplex systems, from a single point of control - an "enterprise master", as illustrated in Figure 2.

The Enterprise Master could also be deployed on a system outside a sysplex, as shown in Figure 3.

IBM**'s Tivoli*** NetView for z/OS**** is the only known product that currently provides these capabilities.

It might sometimes be desirable to segregate various aspects of enterprise management (for example, disaster recovery and more general system availability), such that each aspect is managed from its own Enterprise Master, each of which (including its consolidated operational data repository) is deployed on a different system, perhaps in a different sysplex. There is no known solution that currently provides this capability. For this reason, the concept of multiple Enterprise Masters was conceived.

The concept of multiple Enterprise Masters allows management data to be forwarded to different Enterprise Master instances, depending on the category of data. Thus, specialized management tasks can be focused on one system or at one site to deal with a p...
