Abstract

There so many codec, some codec is for picture compression, some are audio compression, some are video compression. Usually, codec used in service is decided in service provider, and client side, such as internet TV need to support these codec in order to decode contents provided by the service provider. The invention provides an intermediate processing machine between service provider and client.

Title:

Solution to Problem of Having Multiple Codec/DRM

Description of the Invention:

There so many codec, some codec is for picture compression, some are audio compression, some are video compression.  Usually, codec used in service is decided in service provider, and client side, such as internet TV need to support these codec in order to decode contents provided by the service provider.

The invention provides an intermediate processing machine between service provider and client.

What issues/problems does your invention try to address?

The current system has a few major problems.

  1. The client needs support codec, which service provider uses.  If service provider changes supported codec, the client no longer decodes contents from that service provider.

  1. Codec technology is evolving day by day.  When the service provider wants to change codec, the client needs to support.  In order to do so, usually client software update is necessary, which is expensive.

  1. Sometimes client supported codec is decided by company policy.  For example, ATRAC was supported in Walkman or MD because Sony believed that ATRAC protects rights and music industry would support it.

  1. Supported codec on client side is directly reflected to cost.  If more codec is supported, chip set cost is more expensive.

  1. These problems are caused because client side is usually hard to update to deal with codec change.  Number of client unit is huge, and some portion is not updatable.

How did others try to address these issues/problems?

If service providers use only one or a few codec and they don’t change the codec, the problem would be solved.  However, that is not realistic.
