Abstract

The ability to handle a power outage is still a very limited technology. The main solution to power outages at present are Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) devices. What these devices offer are sufficient but still very limited. They provide sufficient battery powered time to shut down the system properly. We are moving into a world of cloud computing, provisioning and technologies that are starting to provide predictive capabilities for power outages. The cost of losing a system in production can be crippling for a company if they have not properly prepared for such an event. Companies usually have live backup systems in case something goes wrong as they understand the cost of such an event far outweighs the cost of this solution. If such events could be predicted, significant savings could be achieved. This invention provides input metrics into a cloud based decision making engine that will work out when the risk is sufficient for a backup provisioned system to be created in the cloud. Other partial solutions can also be put in place based on the risk factor value calculated by the engine.

Cloud based decision making engine calculating when to build backup systems in power outage scenarios

This publication describes a cloud based decision making engine that takes as input, current power outage predictive technologies, along with other input data in order to make a decision on the risk factor of potential power outages. Based on the risk factor value output from the system then multiple solutions will be available to the end user (detailed below). This solution brings together predictive and current technologies and allows for new cloud computing, provisioning and multi-tiered solutions to be used based on the decision made by the intelligence in the system.

The novelty in this invention is the cloud based decision making engine calculating when to build backup systems based on power outage predictions and risk calculations. It will accept input from multiple points of reference and will use all of this data to come to a decision when the system is at risk or is actually under power outage scenarios. Differing risk output valu...
