Disclosed is a method and system for updating status information of contacts present in a buddy list of a user based on frequency of interaction of the user with the contacts.

Consider a case in which a user frequently interacts with a portion of contacts present in a buddy list. In such a case, an Instant Messaging (IM) server is frequently polled for updating status information of the portion of the contacts. Also, the user may not frequently interact with other portion of contacts present in the buddy list. In such a case, the IM server is polled over a longer time interval for updating status information of the other portion of the contacts.

In an embodiment, a Quality of Service (QOS) pertaining to a server may be maintained by prioritizing requests associated with frequently interacted contacts. Consider an example in which a server is overloaded. In such a case, a high priority is assigned to frequently interacted contacts for updating status information of the frequently interacted contacts. As a result, status information of the frequently interacted contacts is updated before updating status information of the less frequently interacted contacts.

Consider another example in which a user has 500 contacts in a buddy list of the user. In one case, there may be 400 contacts with which the user may interact less frequently. In such a case, a less...
