Abstract

The use of the coated (enveloped) shear pin may increase its life time. The coating of the pin serves to reduce or neutralize the cumulative effect of mechanical stress over time. This is done by using the coating material as a kind of shock absorber. The material of the pin is usually: steel, aluminum, magnesium, copper, etc. (or alloys of metals). The material of the coating (mechanical isolation) can be rubber, silicone, plastics, polymers, soft metals, and so on. The coating of the outer material may be covering or implemented using similar coating process, coating (sleeve).The coated (enveloped) shear pin will ensure the improvement of reliability in the areas / applications where shear pins are used. The coated (enveloped) shear pin will in particular be used for mechanical systems which provide the release of flaps / doors at a predetermined force in the case of rapid decompression, for example in an aircraft.
