2.1. Single power on package decoupling of prior art

Figure 1 shows the single power decoupling capacitor used on packages in the industry. Figure 2 shows how the single power decoupling capacitor is used package power designs.

2.2 Dual power on package decoupling of this invention

Figure 3 shows two versions (W and B) of dual power decoupling capacitor of this invented.  Each capacitor has individual anodes and one common cathode for common ground connection.  Figure 4 and 5 shows the dual power on package decoupling.

2.3 Performance and cost comparison

Figure 6 shows the significant power distribution network (PDN) impedance difference between a power with (blue line) and without (red line) on packaging decoupling (OPD) in frequency domain.  Figure 7 shows the same PDN performance in time domain (voltage noise domain) with (green waveform) and without (blue waveform) OPD under the same PRBS7 data stimuli.  The performance of the PDN without OPD is not acceptable for any critical power supply due to its more than 15% voltage fluctuation.
