Method to Motivate a Instant Message Notification Based on Proximity

Current art uses the physical location information to enhance the information relayed for a user via the instant messaging (IM) client interface. One system combines instant messaging and location so a user can see where their buddies are in real-time and share their location information. [1]

The disclosed invention leverages location information to motivate an IM notification/alert when:
• A user is within a customized proximity
• Someone meeting a particular criteria comes within a customized proximity

There is no known, relevant blocking art for this invention. This invention uses enabling art around solutions that combine instant messaging and location, where context is added to in instant message such that a user can see, in real-time, where their IM buddies are physically. It is not the intention of this disclosure to make claims in the space, but rather to leverage available art to enable this idea. Some examples of enabling art include the abilities to:
• Use a device's global positioning system (GPS) to send location information [2]
• Use a device's built-in GPS to send location information between one or more devices to denote current location [2]

• Show a buddy's location in real-time [1]
• Share the user's location [1]

The core idea of this disclosure is to leverage location information to motivate a notification/alert when a user is within certain proximity. This allows a user to infer at a glace who is nearby and customize proximity criteria on a per-user basis.

Example scenario: User infers when another user is within certain proximity, and system notification allows the user to exercise more options for follow up communication.
• Ruthie defines a five foot proximity distance for Pat. The system sends a notification to Ruthie indicating that Pat is within five feet. When Ruthie receives this notification, she can follow up with Pat face to face.

• Ruthie defines a proximity distance for a person within the IT support group. Ruthie receives a notification that a person meeting the criteria is within th...
